RUDIS Compass: A Free Resource for Improving the Quality of Life for Older Dogs
In October 2026, Emanuel S. had to let his dog Rudis go. This experience led to the creation of the RUDIS Compass, in honor of Rudis. The RUDIS Compass can help assess the quality of life of an elderly or sick dog and track its progress over days and weeks.
The RUDIS Compass can be downloaded for free and runs as a single file in a browser on a computer, tablet, or cell phone—no installation, no account, and no internet connection required. No data is transmitted. The seven criteria on the scale are each accompanied by eleven easy-to-understand level descriptions; the progression is displayed as a curve; and a printable report summarizes the observations for the consultation at the veterinarian’s office. The Compass does not replace a veterinarian’s assessment. It is intended to help pet owners organize their observations and arrive at the veterinary practice well-prepared.
